PREW2: Take Control Using a Process Simulator to Get the Nitrogen Out

Presentation Description: The workshop will provide an overview of the fundamental concepts associated with biological nitrogen removal as well as advanced topics associated with instrumentation and controls commonly used at operating facilities. After a brief session on using the simulator, the presentation of each main concept will be followed up by process model simulations led by the instructors but performed by attendees to solidify the understanding of each topic. The workshop will cover nitrification and denitrification in multiple process configurations. Nitrification examples will examine how changes in solids retention time (SRT) and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations impact performance. Denitrification and total nitrogen removal examples will review internal mixed liquor recycle rates, impacts of DO recycles, influent carbon quantity and quality as well as supplemental carbon addition. Advanced topics will include how commonly used sensors and automated controls can improve performance and reduce energy use and chemical consumption. Both steady state and dynamic simulation will be used to drive home concepts and demonstrate the benefits of various control systems. Following each major portion of the workshop, attendees will be given problems to solve on their own to test what they have learned on each subject.
