Public Outreach Lessons Learned: Relocating Backyard Water Main to the Street

Presentation Description: The City of West Sacramento is experiencing aging water lines and a history of deferred maintenance. One neighborhood was in particularly poor quality due to the water main being very old and in the backyard easement, therefore it was hard to access and maintain. City public works staff would find themselves chasing water leaks through the neighborhood backyards on a regular basis. Something had to be done. The City of West Sacramento put together a $5.2 Million dollar project to put in new water main in the right of way and reconnect 90 homes to the new main. During construction, the team was joined by an experienced crew from Teichert Construction. Through partnering and coordination the project team delivered an award-winning project that persevered through material delays, unusual weather, and a small-town neighborhood.

  • Understand key design challenges and their solutions to moving water main from backyards to the right of way.
  • Plan and implement a comprehensive public outreach plan for working in the public’s private backyards.
  • List the lessons learned by Teichert and West Sacramento during construction.
