Presentation Description: All sewer systems enrolled in the statewide General Order for Sanitary Sewer Systems (SSS-WDR) are required to maintain a Sewer System Management Plan (SSMP). Beginning in May 2025, agencies will need to revise their SSMPs to address new requirements contained in the recently reissued SSS-WDR, which became effective in June 2023. Under the new requirements, agencies will need to augment their SSMPs with additional information, such as:

• Identifying system assets vulnerable to climate change;
• Prioritizing condition assessments, capacity assessments, and corrective actions to reduce the severity and consequences of potential spills;
• Coordination with other utilities, such as stormwater and drinking water agencies;
• Expansion of the FOG control program to include rags, wipes, and other debris;
• And more!

The Collection Systems Committee of the Bay Area Clean Water Agencies recently led an effort to develop an updated guidance document for SSMP preparation. This session will share key findings from the guidance document, and help your agency use it to update your SSMP.
